Get Back to The Table
or Get TO the table… for some! Did you know September was “Get Back to The Table” month? It seems a bit difficult for some families to sit down at the table, together, every evening… but that’s not the case in my household.
I wanted to post this and share it with ya’ll because it’s something I don’t mind promoting! I’m curious how many of you actually have meal time together?? (No, not with other readers… but with your family) I posted a poll for the month of September, it’s here. If you have time, please vote, if you haven’t already. I’ll publish the results at the end of the month.
As a child, I remember always eating at the table. It likely plays a small role in why I still do it, I’m not sure. My little family and I always eat together. Be it at the dinner table in the kitchen, the patio table outside, a picnic on a blanket, or wherever — we’re together! Before children, my husband and I sat at the table and ate together. When the hubs was deployed, he obviously wasn’t there but my son and I ate our meal together (and included him in our prayers, before eating).
In a recent survey (via MomCentral), 98% think children benefit from eating meals at the table with their families on a regular basis but only 61% said their families sit down everyday at the table for dinner.
I believe one can always make time for things that are important (and I consider this important). It’s kind of like sex. Seriously. Many people will claim they don’t have active sex lives with their mate because they don’t have time. I say whatever. If you really wanted to, you’d make time! Even with busy lives… there is always time to make time.
Speakin’ of tables – we just bought ourselves a new one. We had a nice table but it was a bit too large for the area that we sit in daily… and I wanted something smaller and less formal. So, we went smaller. They were to deliver it Saturday… and they did – but it was the WRONG one. OMGosh. I was so upset. Now… I must wait ’til Thursday for the right one to arrive. I’m lookin’ forward to the smaller table.. not only for space issues but because it literally brings us closer. =)
Anyway, Get Back to The Table was started by Libby’s to encourage family meal time. You’ll find dinner planning tools, tips, recipes, and money-saving advice there. They also highlight important benefits of family meal time. (There is also a coupon and a contest, there). Thought I’d share it for those who may be interested.
Toodles.

I wanted to comment – I put 3-4 times a week on the poll b/c it said dinner. It could be higher on weeks where we don’t have a lot of activity but also, since Chris travels during the week, we try to eat breakfast together also at least once on the weekend, when he makes pancakes. And while we have “date” night on the weekend, where it’s just he and I, the girls usually join us for dessert, so I think that should count too.

We’ve always eaten dinner together. When my children were at home, that was true, and we still do.

When I was young, we ate at the table together for dinner. It was such a fun time. My father the joker would tease us about this boy and that boy who he thought we liked, a fishing expedition for him. But it was such a fun memory.
Yeah, I encourage families to eat together at dinner time.

Super post, my friend. I too agree that we should make time for the important things in life – and eating together is one of them…

Hope you get the right table soon!

This was a really good post and I totally agree that’s it’s important to eat together as a family. When my sister and I were growing up we always had dinner promptly at 5:45 pm because that’s when our dad got home and he was hungry! After I got married and had my daughter, we always ate dinner together. Now she is married but my husband and I always have dinner together – not promptly at 5:45 though!
I hope your “right” table has shown up!

We eat at the table almost every night. If we order pizza or bring home burgers we might eat in the living room, but when you have a two year old this is not an ideal situation. :p

When I was younger, my family always ate dinner at home together. I have carried that tradition on with our kids. I think it helps us be more ‘together’.
